Two journalists killed, two others injured while covering clashes in Taiz – sources

Two journalists were killed and two others wounded Friday morning while covering the clashes in Taiz city after being targeted by a mortar shell fired by the Houthis- Saleh militants.

Sources in Taiz said that a mortar shell had landed on a group of local media reporters, killing Taqi al-Din al-Huthaifi and Wael al-Absi, and wounding Walid al-Qadasi and Salah al-Din al-Wahbani.

According to medical sources, the injury of Walid al-Qadasi had led to the amputation of his left leg, while Salah al-Wahbani had had a fracture in his right hand.

According to Al Jazeera correspondent in Taiz, the mortar shell hit the journalists while they were still outside the area of clashes.

It is noteworthy that targeting journalists with shells and sniper fire has taken place repeatedly in Taiz, and a number of them were killed and wounded as they were covering the clashes flaring between pro-government forces and the Houthis-Saleh forces in the outskirts of the city,.

The pro-government forces have made significant progress over the past few days in the eastern front of the city, and have taken control of a number of sites that where under the Houthi and Salih militants’ control.

Meanwhile, the militias intensified the missile and artillery shelling on neighborhoods and residential communities in the city, which led to the fall of about 50 civilian casualties, including children and women.
