Griffith: The parties to the war in Yemen have reached an important step in the implementation of prisoner exchange

United Nations special envoy to Yemen Martin Griffiths said Tuesday that the two parties to the war in Yemen had reached an "important step in the implementation of the actual exchange of prisoners and detainees."

Sixteen thousand prisoners, detainees and abductees from both sides were expected to be freed on Jan. 19, according to the agreement between the Yemeni parties, but the agreement was stalled.

"In the framework of the follow-up to the agreement on the exchange of prisoners and detainees, and in accordance with the outcome of the Amman meeting in this regard, the two parties delivered their observations on the statements," Griffiths said in a tweet on his Twitter page.

That step was important.
