Socotra.. Saudi forces deployment after mysterious death of senior officer at Governorate airport

Saudi troops deployed in the vicinity of Socotra International Airport on Friday after the death of a Saudi officer who is in charge of airport security within Saudi forces who entered the island as part of the military intervention of the Arab coalition in Yemen.

A local source told Al-Masdar online that Saudi officer Abdul Latif al-Qahtani, a protection officer at Socotra Airport, died without mentioning the cause of death.

According to the source, the body of the officer was transferred to Saudi Arabia on Friday evening, aboard a private plane.

The province of Socotra is witnessing a state of rivalry between the Saudi and Emirati forces, where the UAE is trying to reduce Saudi influence on the island, which the UAE strives to control completely through attempts to create an armed militia.

Saudi forces arrived in Socotra as a mediator following tension between the Yemeni government and the UAE, mid-last year, after Abu Dhabi landed military forces on the island during the presence of former prime Minister Ahmed Obaid bin Dagher on the island and had a strong stance against those military developments that described by the Yemeni government as  "unjustified".

The Socotra archipelago, a group of islands in the Indian Ocean and declared an independent province several years ago, was not reached by the war and the Houthi coup forces did not receive nor witnessed any terrorist operation, and the entry of UAE and Saudi forces into the island was controversial and opened the door for discussion on ambitions Gulf in the control of the ports, islands and coasts of Yemen.
